What is Hypnosis and FAQ’s.
The purpose of this post is an on going discussion as to what the myths of hypnosis (including any kind of mind-control) and the correct information about it. I’ve started with a couple of myths and corrections. Please feel free to add more of each. Anything that seems appropriate will be added to the blog.
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a process of inducing someone so that their conscience mind is suppressed and the subconscious is more aware. This makes the subject more open to suggestions, fantasies and ideas. Even though the subject is open to all this, no one can be hypnotized if they don’t want to.
In fact, everyone goes into a trance everyday. The best example is the movies. When you go to the movies, and you really get into the story, you forget that you are in a theatre. Sometimes you actually feel the emotion that the people on the screen is emoting. A hypnotic trance is very much like that.
Myth: ”Once you go into a trance you could get ‘stuck’ and stay in one forever.”
Truth: If you are in a trance long enough, either you would bring yourself out of it, or you’d fall asleep for a little while. Also, I know personally that subjects can snap out of a trance on their own if a circumstance or even a command warrants it.
Myth: ”I’ll lose control and I’ll find myself robbing a bank or something.”
Truth: Anything you don’t want to do, or deemed dangerous, you will not carry out.
Myth: ”Under hypnosis can one lose their own identity and become like a mindless zombie, reacting only to the commands of the hypnotist?”
Truth: During the trance, yes, this could possibly happen. It’s part of the fun. :-) However, it should be mentioned that the subject can (and will) break the trance and “come out of it” if something disturbing happens to them. This could be something as simple as a loud noise or a command that the subject wouldn’t want to do outside of a trance.
I’m sure there are more questions, so feel free to ask in the comments.
